The KLF

Having spent much of the remaining part of 1991 in either the recording studio or the film stage at Elstree The KLF treated the world to KLF 99 - Justified and Ancient. The main release featuring Tammy Wynette was a massive chart hit and the Tony Thorpe and Maxine Harvey mixes found popularity in the clubs. By that Christmas the media were all trying to get a piece of The KLF. The BBC wanted a performance for their Top Of The Pops Special and they agreed to perform 3am Eternal. But The KLF had no intention of performing the chart hit version, instead they were going to do a speed-thrash-metal version with Extreme Noise Terror. When BBC executives got wind of what they were planning they pulled the plug and completely banned The KLF from the program. Within weeks the track was released on 7" available by mail order only and limited to just 1000 copies, both NME and Melody Maker made it their single of the week and in the end The KLF could have sold it 200 times over. In February 1992 in celebration of The Justified Ancients Of Mu Mu discovering the shores of the continent of America, some 1000 years earlier and definitely before Columbus! The KLF released their final single KLF USA4X - America: What Time Is Love? The track was full on and featured ex Deep Purple member Glen Hughes on vocals, it was another top 5 chart success. Amidst the fame and notoriety The KLF were asked to perform live at the 1992 Brit Awards. They agreed and this time were allowed to appear performing the ENT version of 3am. Towards the end of the performance the kilt clad Drummond brought out an automatic machine gun and opened up across the bewildered rich and famous audience. The bullets were blank but the impact was massive and as Bill and Jimmy left the stage their friend and long-time publicist Scott Peiring announced "Ladies & Gentlemen The KLF have now left the music industry". After leaving the Brits they delivered a freshly slaughtered sheep to the Post-Awards VIP party with a note around it which read "I Died For You". Days later their final press release was issued confirming that their entire back catalogue had been deleted.
